Peter Dutton Gets his New Position

If Prime Minister Turnbull is to realise his policy agenda, particularly on critical issues such as energy reform, he will need the support in cabinet of his conservative Praetorian Guard, Scott Morrison, Mathias Cormann and Peter Dutton.

The price for this has been to meet their demands that Peter Dutton be given a super ministry to cover Border Protection, Immigration, ASIO, the Australian Federal Police, the National Crime Commission and Austrac.

The decision was taken without a cabinet submission or decision.

It is in effect a “captain’s pick’.

Mr Turnbull said that the report found that the threats to Australia were constantly evolving and required new measures to deal with them.
