Fire Action Week Sparks into Motion

This week is Fire Avtion Week, where Victoria’s firefighters are being supported to keep the community safe this fire season.

Courtney had the story on this morning's Brekkie Flow.

As mentioned, Victorians are being urged to prepare early for the upcoming fire season, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting an above-normal fire season this summer and bushfires already impacting the Gippsland region.

Fire Action Week, which has been held each year since 2009, is a time for households to increase their understanding of local fire risks, prepare their properties and plan how to stay safe.

Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said: “Our firefighters do us proud every single day and are ready for another dangerous fire season but it is important that every Victorian does their part to ensure they stay safe – that’s what Fire Action Week is all about."

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio also commented, saying: “The immediate focus in our community needs to be on staying safe this bushfire season.

“Talk to your family and friends about your plans, and make sure you know when to leave and where to go to stay safe.”

Victorians can stay up-to-date with emergency warnings throughout the fire season by tuning into local radio and Sky News broadcasts, phoning the VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226, visiting emergency.vic.gov.au, and downloading the VicEmergency App.
