The Government Blows the Budget

The Treasurer claimed in his post budget address to the Press Club that the budget was on the way to balance because the government had expenditure under control.

This was repeated by the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, last week when he replied to criticism by former Treasurer Peter Costello with the observation that, under his government, expenditure was the lowest it had been for 50 years.

The government has been claiming that expenditure has been limited to real growth of 1.9% a year.

However analysis by former senior Treasury official Des Moore published in Quadrant Online paints a different picture.
